Chapter 12 – Farewell
Volume 1: Apocalypse Beginning
"Um, Brother Wen Yu, I was wondering how you obtained your Hidden Class? Of course, if it's inconvenient for you, just treat it as me being nosy."
Although Duan Wenfeng didn't ask what Wen Yu's Hidden Class was, he was clearly very curious about how to obtain a Hidden Class.
Duan Wenxue didn't make any moves either, her beautiful big eyes fixed intently on Wen Yu. Clearly, she was eager to know the answer to this question.
"Well, actually, it's not really inconvenient."
Wen Yu hesitated for a moment. In fact, the matter of Hidden Class wasn't much of a secret. At dawn, he would be heading to Riverside Park, and whether they'd ever meet again was uncertain.
Besides, Wen Yu didn't mind letting good people become a bit stronger. After all, he had witnessed that kind of sorrow-villains running rampant, morality collapsing, and the weak constantly diminishing the strength of their own race. Wen Yu didn't want to concern himself with the bigger picture, nor could he, but he wasn't stingy about giving some help to kind people.
The main reason, though, was that there was no conflict of interest at all. That was the real reason Wen Yu decided to answer.
"I saw a constantly spinning silver-white vortex. After entering, I learned it was called a Treasure Land. Inside, there was a treasure chest, and in the chest was a Class Change Scroll for a Hidden Class."
Upon hearing Wen Yu's explanation, the three-person squad fell into deep thought. Wen Yu had nothing more to say, and the atmosphere became silent for a moment.
"Big Brother Wen Yu? Have you been alone all day?"
After a while, once the three had digested the news about the Hidden Class, Duan Wenxue was the first to ask.
"Yes." Wen Yu nodded quietly and answered softly.
"Why not join our squad, Brother Wen Yu? It's safer for us to kill Zombies and earn Points together than to go solo."
Duan Wenfeng was clearly envious of Wen Yu's Hidden Class. Obviously, the combat power of a Hidden Class wouldn't be low.
And for a Lone Wolf without any malice, he was absolutely the target any squad would want to recruit.
Although the Apocalypse had just begun, some generally accepted rules and survival models, like Hunting Squads, had already quietly appeared. One had to admit, humanity's adaptability was truly strong.
"I'd rather not. I'm more used to being on my own."
Wen Yu pretended to think for a moment and declined Duan Wenfeng's invitation.
What a joke-even if you guys become awesome later, I'm a Reborn, and you want me to team up with you so you can pick up the scraps behind me? Be your babysitter and clean up your messes? What's the point of living again if that's all I do?
"That's really a shame."
Wen Yu smiled apologetically at Duan Wenfeng.
…
The night passed peacefully.
At dawn, Wen Yu was awakened by the sound of light footsteps. Looking up, he saw Duan Wenfeng tiptoeing out of bed, apparently trying not to disturb his sleeping sister.
He smiled apologetically at Wen Yu and quietly went downstairs.
"He really is a kind person."
Looking at the warm scene before him, Wen Yu felt a bit moved. After all, humans generally appreciate beautiful things.
Wen Yu glanced out the window-the sky was already fully bright. He checked the clock on the wall: 7 a.m.
Wen Yu quietly disarmed the small traps he had set, grabbed his gear, and slowly went downstairs.
Downstairs, Duan Wenfeng had just come out of the bathroom and saw Wen Yu fully armed.
"Brother Wen Yu, are you heading out?"
"Yes, going out to kill more Zombies and earn more Points."
Looking at the big guy before him, Wen Yu hesitated for a moment. Even though he knew they might never meet again, he couldn't help but offer a reminder.
"If you're planning to go hunting today, it's best not to head toward Jindu Community. There's a very strong creature over there-a mutated big dog. Hmm, you'd better choose a different place tonight.
Thinking about dogs, Wen Yu couldn't help but grow anxious; their sense of smell is extremely keen. Level 1 Mutant Creatures have powerful regenerative abilities, so by tomorrow, One-Eye would probably be fully recovered.
If that Beast is vengeful and tracks me by scent, it could mean another fierce battle, and the outcome might be very unfavorable for me.
"Animals can mutate too?"
Duan Wenfeng didn't doubt it. After all, in this messed-up world, even Class Holders and Exchange Pillars have appeared. He wouldn't be surprised even if something like a Gundam showed up.
However, from Wen Yu's warning, it was clear that even a Hidden Class Holder like Wen Yu wasn't a match for Mutant Creatures, let alone himself and his sister, who were just ordinary Class Holders.
"Yeah."
Wen Yu replied simply, quickly heading out the door toward Riverside Park.
…
No longer paying attention to the Guardian Squad he encountered last night, Wen Yu swept through all the Zombies he saw along the way. Occasionally, some small animals that hadn't mutated yet appeared, but he didn't pay much attention to them.
Although these Little Ones hadn't mutated yet, they inevitably would. Any animal that hasn't mutated will, without exception, be killed and eaten.
However, killing Mutant Creatures before they reach a certain level doesn't grant any Points.
And are Mutant Creatures truly enemies or allies? This was a question countless people in his previous life never figured out.
Mutant Creatures do hunt humans, but when the Demon Realm Gate opened, they became Earth's strongest native force, firmly resisting the invaders from the Demon Realm.
It could be said that when the Apocalypse began, humanity had already lost its position as the Ruler, and Mutant Creatures became Earth's hope for the future-the main reason Earth wasn't completely conquered.
In his previous life, if not for the Mutant Creatures, all humans in Mudanjiang City would have been wiped out by the overwhelming Demonic Creatures.
Wen Yu didn't want to dwell on these complicated issues for now. He swung his weapon, swiftly harvesting the Zombies on the road.
Occasionally, he encountered some survivors. For those cowardly ones hiding in their homes, constantly calling for help, Wen Yu ignored them.
For the small squads he met who dared to fight, Wen Yu silently avoided them. Even if they met face-to-face, both sides would steer clear of contact. With the Apocalypse just beginning, survivors were already wary of their own kind.
Since he was in a small city in Northeast China, the population density was low, and his location wasn't a busy commercial area, so the number of Zombies posed no threat to Wen Yu at all.
He had no concept of mercy for these filthy things. When the Blood Moon opens the Inter-Realm Passage, these Zombies will undergo terrifying mutations and be completely controlled by Demon Qi, turning into puppets of the Demon Realm.
There's a saying in the Apocalypse: Humanity's enemy is the Demonized Zombie; Mutant Beasts' enemy is the Demonic Creatures. This is the true picture half a year after the end began.
Harvesting the lives of Zombies, each one brought Wen Yu 1 to 3 Points.
Some Zombies had clearly become physically stronger, a result of devouring enough flesh and blood to evolve.
Once they reach a certain threshold, Zombies undergo Promotion. Level 1 Zombies are slightly weaker than Level 1 Class Holders, but they're no longer something ordinary people can resist."
