Chapter 35 – Bringing Benefit to All Under Heaven and Perfecting Oneself Alone
Volume 2: Battlefield Between Two Worlds
In the room where Wen Yu was staying, the shoddily made wooden door let out a series of creaks, waking Wen Yu up.
Wen Yu squinted and glanced over. It was Sun Ruixing.
"You're back?"
Stretching, Wen Yu propped himself up and sized up the disheveled person in front of him.
Sun Ruixing had clearly been through a hard fight. His Protective Suit had been torn to rags, and even his face had had a large chunk of flesh clawed off by a Zombie.
Sun Ruixing nodded to Wen Yu. "I've only been back a little while. Just now I went to Li Dalong's place, but there was no one there. I asked someone at random, and they told me where you were."
What had happened in the afternoon was common knowledge. Aside from the news that the beast Ergang was already dead, the most eye-catching thing was that a super-strong expert had come to the Camp-Wen Yu.
"I guess I'm a bit of a celebrity here now, huh!"
After a self-mocking sigh, Wen Yu lay back down on the bed again.
Sun Ruixing looked at Wen Yu and asked hesitantly, "Um… where's Bai Xiao'an?"
Wen Yu had already guessed it would be this mess. He spoke straight out: "Sun Aotian took him away. Oh right-Sun Aotian is a Level 2 Class Holder in this Camp. Bai Xiao'an's sister got together with a strong expert. As for Bai Xiao'an's injuries, you definitely don't need to worry about them."
"Did Bai Feifei do it of her own free will?"
"Of course!"
"That's good. That's good."
Seeing Sun Ruixing nod with satisfaction, Wen Yu was surprised instead.
"You didn't get Bai Feifei, and you don't feel it wasn't worth it? Look at you-you almost didn't make it back alive, did you? Don't tell me you went to save people just because your sympathy overflowed?"
Sun Ruixing gave Wen Yu a strange look and opened his mouth to ask, "How could I possibly be doing it for Bai Feifei? I'm old enough to be her father, alright?"
Wen Yu rolled his eyes. "Li Quan'an is old enough to be her father too. Back in Hualin Town, weren't the two of them still all lovey-dovey?"
"People aren't all the same. I didn't think that much!"
Sun Ruixing let out a sigh and sat down right beside Wen Yu's bed.
"It's just that when I saw Bai Feifei, I thought of my daughter. They're about the same age. My daughter is all alone in Yanjing City. I used to think it wouldn't be a problem, but after seeing what Chaihe Town is like, I don't even dare to think anymore."
Hearing Sun Ruixing's words, Wen Yu silently took out two cigarettes, handed one to Sun Ruixing, and the two of them began to smoke together.
"Girls, in this fucked-up world, are really pitiful!"
Wen Yu let out that sigh for no particular reason. What Sun Ruixing had just said stirred something in him.
A father's love is as steady as a mountain; from Sun Ruixing's words, Wen Yu could feel his concern for his daughter.
That kind of feeling was something Wen Yu hadn't experienced in more than ten years…
"So for these people, I just help when I can. I'm really afraid that if Yanjing City is like this too, and if no one lends a hand, what kind of treatment my daughter might end up suffering."
After hearing Sun Ruixing out, Wen Yu, for once, didn't sneer at him.
What Wen Yu pursued was absolute strength. People like Wen Yu were humanity's sky, humanity's pillar-the capital that let humankind maintain its ability to survive amid disaster, and the means by which humankind could strike back in the future.
But the continuation of humankind had never depended on people like that.
It depended on countless Ordinary People-countless people whom, in Wen Yu's eyes, could be called the weak, ants, Cannon Fodder.
The reason these people could go on living was precisely because of the sacrifices of innumerable others of their own kind-innumerable sacrifices made by Saintly Person types like Sun Ruixing.
Wen Yu would never become that kind of person, but that didn't stop him from admiring them.
A good person shouldn't be looked down on-no matter the occasion, the time, or the place.
"Did you go into the town today?"
Wen Yu watched Sun Ruixing's dazed look and knew the man was thinking about his daughter again. He cut off Sun Ruixing's train of thought directly.
"I took a look from far away. The situation is about the same as what Li Dalong said-very bad."
"Tell me the details tomorrow when you go take a look with me. Oh, right-you don't have anywhere to stay yet, do you? Just make do on the floor in this room for the night."
Sun Ruixing looked at Wen Yu in surprise, not knowing when Wen Yu had become so approachable.
"Alright."
Sun Ruixing was straightforward. He lay down on the floor, and before long, he was snoring loudly.
Wen Yu glanced at the wounds on Sun Ruixing's body, then raised his head to stare at the ceiling, slowly sinking into his own thoughts.
In his previous life, Wen Yu had seen people like this too. He had even been one of the beneficiaries. But their endings all shared one thing in common: they died fast.
Good people could be trusted-like how Wen Yu dared to let Sun Ruixing sleep beneath his bed, because Wen Yu knew that unless there was an extremely huge conflict of interest, Sun Ruixing would never harm anyone.
But in the Apocalypse, being a good person wasn't easy, and it really didn't lead to a long life.
Those were the experiences and lessons of countless people.
With his experience from his previous life, Wen Yu naturally wouldn't fall into that trap. But for people like Sun Ruixing, Wen Yu wouldn't take the initiative to hurt them. What's more, they were the kind of reliable comrades you could safely turn your back to.
But not good teammates.
Comrades and teammates were fundamentally different.
Not bothering to think about all that messy nonsense, Wen Yu directly deactivated Combat State, then summoned One-Eye.
The Little Soul Beast was in great spirits, still lively and bouncing around. It seemed that, from now on, Combat State could be considered Wen Yu's everyday form. It was just that without the Little Soul Beast's presence on his shoulder, Wen Yu always felt as if something was missing.
"One-Eye, go guard the door."
One-Eye let out two aggrieved whines. After all, it had been hungry all day, and now, late at night, it still had to come out and stand watch.
Ignoring One-Eye's complaints, Wen Yu lay on his back and fell asleep.
…
The night was at its darkest.
In Chaihe Town, three bedraggled figures hunched low and moved slowly through the silent cluster of buildings.
A voice sounded.
"Li-Ge, what do we do?"
After a moment, the man called Li-Ge answered, "There's no way. This afternoon, to force our way into town, every one of us got banged up. Even Xiao Fang got eaten by a Zombie. Now we're trapped here and can't get out for the time being."
"If you ask me, we never should've left the Camp."
A complaining voice rose-it came from the last of the three.
The atmosphere instantly turned awkward.
These three were none other than Li Quan'an and the others who had run out of Zang Pengfei Settlement.
Under the cover of night, Li Quan'an's face was livid.
People's hearts were truly hard to fathom. He had gone to great lengths to bring several trusted subordinates out of Hualin Town, yet less than half a day after leaving the Camp, his confidants were already complaining.
Everyone had their own thoughts, and human nature had always been something you couldn't pin down.
So there would never be any absolutely loyal lackeys!!
"Li-Ge, look-there's a light up ahead!"
