Chapter 47 – Insider
Volume 3
Hearing Xiao Xue's greeting, Fang Yuan merely shrugged and gave no real response.
The Class Holder beside him, however, respectfully snapped a military salute toward Kuangliu, who was standing at the restaurant entrance.
"Greetings, Lord War God."
Only when he heard the man's voice did Kuangliu turn to look at him.
"And you are?"
"He's a Class Holder from the Modu Settlement. He came this time on General Peng's instructions to celebrate my grandfather's birthday."
Fang Yuan deliberately enunciated the words "my grandfather" very clearly.
After hearing that, Kuangliu gave a slight nod, then ignored the two of them and walked straight outside.
Fang Yuan did not press the issue. He merely glanced at Wen Yu behind Kuangliu, a faint look of contemplation flickering in his eyes.
…
"That's some serious bad blood."
Sitting in the passenger seat, Wen Yu said this to Kuangliu.
A mere Peak Level 1 Class Holder actually dared provoke a Level 4 Class Holder. To Wen Yu, that was simply unthinkable!
Kuangliu nodded directly, but did not explain any of the inside story.
Clearly, there were certain things here that were not quite suitable for Wen Yu to know.
Xiao Xue, sitting in the back, explained instead.
"Fang Yuan's grandfather was one of the founding meritorious figures…"
Wen Yu nodded, indicating he understood.
"This is exactly why I don't want to join the Military. You people have way too many concerns. Interest exchanges on every side, all sorts of unspoken rules. I really don't get it. Wouldn't it be better to keep things simple?"
Hearing Wen Yu's words, Kuangliu nodded, then revealed a somewhat ferocious smile.
"Things are going to change very soon…"
Wen Yu glanced at Kuangliu's hands gripping the steering wheel. The veins on them were bulging. Clearly, Kuangliu harbored deep resentment toward those from the Aristocratic Families!
And the meaning behind what he had just said…
Wen Yu fell silent for a long while before asking directly.
"Is it related to my mission?"
Wen Yu owed the Military one mission. Wen Yu remembered that, and naturally, the Military remembered it even more clearly!
Kuangliu did not continue. Instead, he smiled at Wen Yu.
"Once you meet Commander Lin tomorrow, you'll know."
…
It had to be said that the Inner City's environment was indeed much better than the Outer City's. All kinds of buildings stood in neat rows, some belonging to powerful battle groups, and some to the Military.
Of course, a mere two months was not enough for the Yanjing Settlement to restore its original economic order. With the old currency from before the Apocalypse rendered useless, new equivalents had appeared. More importantly, the resources currently in the hands of Survivors were still insufficient, which made the streets seem very deserted.
More than half of the people on the streets were Class Holders wearing all manner of protective gear.
"This is the residential district reserved for the Military High Command in the Inner City."
Kuangliu slowly stopped the car in front of a row of detached villas, then got out and pointed to the first house on the right.
"This one's yours. Permanently. Mine is right across from you."
Wen Yu nodded.
Putting everything else aside, for the Military to allocate him a villa identical to Kuangliu's in a place like the Inner City, where land was so scarce, was enough to prove their sincerity.
Kuangliu took a key from his pocket and handed it to Wen Yu, then said, "Get a good night's sleep. I'll come pick you up tomorrow morning."
Wen Yu nodded. Paying no attention to Kuangliu as he turned and got back into the car, Wen Yu walked straight into the villa.
…
The villa was large and very clean. All sorts of daily necessities and appliances were fully stocked, and given this location, Wen Yu absolutely did not believe the place would lack things like water and electricity.
Wen Yu chose a bedroom for himself on the third floor of the villa. Meanwhile, the room opposite was taken over by One-Eye.
That was One-Eye's doghouse.
One-Eye even claimed a room for Star right next to his own. He had even drilled a big dog hole through the wall between the two rooms!
Listening to the constant clanging and banging coming from One-Eye's room, Wen Yu shook his head helplessly.
Opening the Fourth Soul Realm, Wen Yu summoned Faceless.
He gently tried to communicate with Faceless's consciousness, but unfortunately, Faceless's mind was a muddled chaos, unable to transmit any useful information at all.
This left Wen Yu feeling rather helpless.
One situation was easy to foresee: once Faceless's copied state was broken by an enemy, Faceless's fragile true body simply would not be able to withstand Level 4 attack power.
That was equivalent to limiting Faceless's combat range-it had to stay by Wen Yu's side.
After briefly simulating Faceless's future battle scenarios, Wen Yu placed Faceless at the head of the bed, then closed his eyes.
Unless necessary, Wen Yu was not used to placing his Soul Pets inside the Soul Realm.
According to One-Eye's description, that place was good in every way, but in essence, it was a prison.
…
Back in the restaurant where Wen Yu and Kuangliu had eaten earlier.
Fang Yuan and the people from the Modu Settlement had already finished their meal. Only Fang Yuan remained, sitting alone in the empty hall.
After pondering for a moment, Fang Yuan picked up the communicator in his pocket and dialed a number directly.
"Beep… beep… beep…"
After several busy tones, a voice came through the communicator.
"Find out who the Class Holder with Kuangliu today is. I want his identity."
The person on the other end gave a brief acknowledgment. In less than five minutes, information on Wen Yu's identity and level had been relayed over the phone and into Fang Yuan's ears.
"Sequence 2, huh."
Fang Yuan thought for a moment, then immediately stood and hurried toward the Central District.
Clearly, the appearance of Sequence 2 was enough to turn the current situation in the Yanjing Settlement completely upside down!
Fang Yuan might not be strong, and he might not have much courage-anyone could tell that from the fact that he had delayed challenging his Promotion Trial for so long. But as a third-generation red heir raised by one of the Aristocratic Families, a second-generation official and second-generation rich kid rolled into one, he was definitely no true idiot!
…
While Fang Yuan was rushing back to the Central District, the Class Holder who had just eaten with him had already returned to the Outer City.
Looking at the crooked, twisting alleys before him, and the refugees sprawled all over the ground with hollow eyes, a flash of disdain passed through the Class Holder's gaze.
Then he wound through the complicated maze of alleyways, turning this way and that. Only after making sure no living creature was following him did he step into a dilapidated little building.
The building was utterly ordinary, but in the Outer City, even an ordinary building meant it had to be the residence of a powerful Class Holder.
Before Peng Jun's subordinate could enter, two Class Holders guarding the door stopped him.
"Halt. This is Light Team territory."
Seeing the arrogant looks on their faces, Peng Jun's subordinate could not help but frown-though mostly, he was disgusted by that awful name.
"Take me to your leader!"
After saying that, Peng Jun's subordinate took a token from his chest.
When the two gatekeeping Class Holders saw the token, they exchanged a glance. Then one of them took out a Walkie-Talkie and spoke directly to the people inside.
"Check the surroundings. See if anyone followed him."
A short while later, a reply came from the Walkie-Talkie.
"All clear!"
Only then did the two Class Holders relax. They gave Peng Jun's subordinate a strange salute.
"Greetings, my lord."
Peng Jun's subordinate was quite satisfied with their caution. He nodded and walked into the building.
…
The interior was badly run-down, but in the Apocalypse, having a place to stay at all was already considered decent. Besides, there were many Survivors inside.
Almost every room in the entire building was packed with Survivors. Most of them were refugees with sallow faces, people who went hungry day after day.
Although their complexions were poor, their mental state was astonishingly excited.
Seeing this, Peng Jun's subordinate nodded. He was clearly very satisfied with the "work" being done here. Then, following the Class Holder leading the way, he went straight to the top floor.
Before they even reached the office on the top floor, waves of decadent moans had already drifted into everyone's ears.
Hearing those sounds, Peng Jun's subordinate's brows immediately furrowed. He kicked the office door open and strode inside.
Inside the room, a fat, big-eared Burly Man was in the middle of the most primitive sort of physical contact with two young women. Hearing the loud bang from the door, he instantly jumped in fright.
The Burly Man was just about to fly into a rage when he saw what Peng Jun's subordinate looked like. In a panic, he hurriedly pulled up his pants, then bowed and scraped as he offered his greetings.
Peng Jun's subordinate waved a hand. First, he looked over the office's furnishings. Then he looked at the two naked women standing off to the side. After a long moment, he shook his head.
"All of you, get out."
At his words, the women and the Class Holder who had led the way immediately left the room, closing the door behind them.
"Fatty, you seem to be living pretty well here."
Hearing the teasing tone in his voice, the fat man immediately bowed and scraped as he said, "Everything is for the church!"
After hearing that, Peng Jun's subordinate nodded and directly took out an item.
It was a small box that looked like a radio.
Only then did he speak.
"Take this. It's a tool newly developed by the Research Department. It can speed up the brainwashing process. Also, the Cult Master's latest orders!"
"Expand the number of believers faster, but be even more careful in how you act. The Military has already set its sights on us. You're working right under the Military's nose, so you must be doubly cautious! If you ruin the Demon Worship Cult's grand plan, even ten lives won't be enough to pay for it!"
Hearing this mixture of coaxing and warning, the fat man immediately nodded.
"Also, if anything happens, you can contact this person."
Peng Jun's subordinate pondered for a moment, then took out another slip of paper. On it was written a name and contact method.
When the fat man saw the name on the slip of paper, his expression instantly changed.
"This person… How could this person possibly…"
"Nothing is impossible, as long as the benefits are great enough!"
"All right. I've told you everything that needs to be said. Work hard. Once this succeeds, when the Demon Realm descends, you'll become one of the first to be transformed, and you'll also become a member of the great Demon Race!"
