Chapter 94 – Guardian God
Volume 3: Rising Winds and Clouds
The few soldiers still alive watched the scene unfold, and the despair in their eyes deepened.
Their leader-a Level 4 Class Holder-was the worst of all. Regret and fury burned in his eyes as his War Blade whipped through the air, hacking apart several Bipedal Lizards surrounding him.
"Run… Run!"
He roared the words as he fought to carve out a path of escape.
But surrounded by nearly a thousand Bipedal Lizards, where could they possibly run?
Countless slick tongues lashed around his body. None of them held much strength by itself, but there were simply too many. Nearly a thousand low-level Bipedal Lizards dragged the Level 4 Class Holder down as if he had stumbled into a quagmire.
There was a simple reason this squad had been surrounded.
As more and more Military Warriors joined the fight, the battle had swung sharply in the Military's favor. Their front line kept advancing until the low-level Bipedal Lizards had been penned within a three-hundred-kilometer radius of Demon City.
That left every Military fighter facing the same awkward problem: too many hunters, too little prey.
The captain leading this squad-the Level 4 Class Holder-had pushed far beyond the front line in pursuit of Points, only to find his entire team encircled by Bipedal Lizards.
As the battle deteriorated, the Level 4 captain fought with everything he had. It was not enough. One by one, he watched his comrades get devoured, then transformed into new Bipedal Lizards.
"It's over…"
Just as despair swallowed him, the head of a Bipedal Lizard at the Peak Level 3 exploded in front of him. A savage bestial roar shook the sky.
"Xing. Kill them."
The indifferent voice came from overhead. Then the few surviving soldiers saw a blaze of fire.
…
"Weren't you ordered not to come this far?"
Wen Yu watched Xing and One-Eye pick Magic Crystals from the ground as he questioned the Level 4 Class Holder beside him.
"There were… too many people behind us…"
"So you got greedy."
"Yes, sir!"
Wen Yu nodded at the answer.
"Gather up the remains, then take your men straight back to the Outpost. Explain this to your commanding officer yourself. If punishment is due, you'll take it."
"Yes, sir!" the captain shouted.
Once Xing and One-Eye finished collecting their spoils, Wen Yu immediately continued deeper into the battlefield.
…
"Captain, was that our newly appointed Lord War God? That dragon was incredible!"
Only after Wen Yu had disappeared from view did the Military Warriors lower their saluting hands. One young soldier leaned closer and asked the question in a whisper.
The captain nodded, paused, then said, "War God is fine as a private nickname. According to something No. 6 let slip, that man is even stronger than Lord War God. The pity is, he isn't one of ours. Commander Lin wanted to grant him the title of War God, but he turned it down…"
Even as he spoke, the soldier still could not understand it.
War God-the title that represented the pinnacle of combat power in all Huaxia, perhaps even the entire Human Race-and the man had refused it.
"Forget all that War God business. He saved our lives." The sniper at the rear hugged his rifle, excitement in his voice and an almost worshipful gleam in his eyes. "Personally, I think Guardian God suits him better. You may not know this, but the name has already spread through the Eastern Theater. He's saved a lot of people out here."
The captain gave a slight nod.
"He's saved me twice before. Counting today, that makes three…" He sighed. "I just don't know if I'll be lucky enough to survive a fourth."
The weight in his low sigh silenced the rest of the squad.
There was nothing else to say. Military casualties might not be high, but they had still reached roughly twenty percent.
On this battlefield, only one thing ruled the lives and deaths of ordinary soldiers.
Luck.
"Let's go. I'll probably be sent to the Suicide Squad after this…"
…
By then, Wen Yu was roaming the ground in front of Demon City.
Bipedal Lizards continued pouring out of the city without end. Unfortunately for them, without any high-level combatants among them, they posed almost no threat to Wen Yu.
He narrowed his eyes at the slowly thinning Fog of War, his thoughts unreadable.
"What do you think they're doing inside that fog?"
One-Eye barked at once from Wen Yu's arms.
"My guess is they're in there making babies…"
Wen Yu answered by rapping him on the head.
"Can't see. Don't know," Xing replied, blunt as ever.
Wen Yu tilted his head toward the Little Soul Beast beside him. "What do you think?"
The Little Soul Beast's Physical Attribute had now risen to 465 Points, every last one gained through Dark Attribute Magic Crystals. Wen Yu still had plenty of Points on hand. The next time he returned to the Outpost, he could raise the Little Soul Beast's Physical Attribute all the way to the Peak Level 4.
And as its Physical Attribute increased, so did its ability to think.
"Maybe they're digging in there… tunneling straight to the Outpost…"
Of the three, the Little Soul Beast had offered the most plausible answer.
Wen Yu still shook his head.
"They can't dig all the way to the Outpost. The Military has deployed vibration detectors all across the front. Machinery would pick up the tremors. They might be able to tunnel as far as the front line, but the Military already has countermeasures for that."
The Little Soul Beast fell silent after his explanation.
"Oh, right, Boss. Mimi told me the day before yesterday that the soldiers here call you the Guardian God…" Its clear, youthful voice sounded directly in Wen Yu's mind. "Does that make me a Guardian Beast?"
Mimi was the name of Xiao Xue's Soul Beast.
After Xiao Xue advanced to Level 4, her Soul Beast's mind had matured considerably. Soul Beasts also shared a special connection that allowed them to speak directly with one another at close range.
Wen Yu merely shook his head at the question.
Xing and One-Eye, on the other hand, immediately began clamoring.
"Then I'm the Guardian Dragon…"
"From now on, call me the Guardian Dog… Bro!"
Wen Yu's face darkened at the racket.
"Those names are awful. Both of you, enough…"
