Chapter 142 – When Dry Wood Meets a Gentle Fire
“Luo Heng, are you feeling any better?”
In a small room in the adjacent building, Zhang Ning sat beside a sofa, looking at Luo Heng who was lying on it.
Without any painkillers, Luo Heng was repeatedly waking up from his sleep due to the pain.
Of course, there was another reason he couldn’t sleep.
“Much better… but I’m wondering if that little girl Wang Lin will…” Luo Heng’s tone was somewhat uncertain.
Zhang Ning gave him a deep look and said, “You care for Wang Lin like she’s your own sister, so I can understand why you wouldn’t want to part with her. But those are her relatives, and if she wants to go with them… Sigh, it’s a shame that Ling Mo isn’t willing to leave with us. Otherwise, it would be a happy ending for everyone. Maybe he thinks we’re not strong enough and would be a burden to him?”
Luo Heng hesitated for a moment, then slowly shook his head. “No, even though he’s a superhuman, we have two superhumans here, plus guns. He must have his own plans. We can’t impose our thoughts on others. Let’s stop worrying about this. Now, I just hope Wang Lin will leave with us tomorrow. I really feel for that girl. Even though she can be sharp-tongued, she has her good points. And from what I’ve seen, Ling Mo doesn’t treat her particularly well. Following them might not be in her best interest.”
“But… you know, she and Ding Yu…” Zhang Ning looked warily towards the door and lowered her voice.
“I know. Ever since Ding Yu suggested abandoning her, Wang Lin’s attitude towards him has been terrible. Ding Yu is good in many ways, but he’s too rational and cold-hearted. He shouldn’t have said what he did in front of Wang Lin. Still, I hope that over time, their relationship will improve,” Luo Heng said.
Zhang Ning’s expression was somewhat complicated. She opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something, but in the end, she just sighed softly.
Luo Heng’s honesty was precisely why she liked him. Unfortunately, this blockhead was utterly clueless when it came to relationships… She had considered that this world wasn’t suited for romantic feelings; with their lives hanging by a thread, what sense was there in worrying about such things?
But then again, precisely because life was so uncertain, it made sense to do what you wanted while you were still alive, to avoid any regrets.
Especially since… she had almost never seen Luo Heng again today.
Thinking of this, Zhang Ning suddenly bit her lip. After staring at Luo Heng for a while and seeing he was still lost in thought, she suddenly pounced on him.
“Ah! Ouch… Zhang Ning, what are you doing… stop kissing… stop undressing… ah…”
“Stop moving!”
“What are you trying to do… this… are you planning to… this is wrong, this counts as assault!”
“Hmph! If you can avoid reacting, I naturally won’t be able to do anything to you.”
“I… I’m not ready yet… we’re friends…”
“Who said we’re friends! I never intended to just be friends with you from the start! Anyway, while I’m still alive and so are you…”
Just as Zhang Ning pressed down on Luo Heng, taking advantage of his inability to move, three pairs of eyes were peeking through a slightly ajar door, intently watching their every move.
As the scene escalated, the corners of Ling Mo’s mouth curled into a strange smile. He slowly closed the door and said, “What a case of dry wood meeting a gentle fire! Oh no, it’s a warm fire…”
“Ling-Ge… they…”
Ye Lian’s eyes were still wide open. She had just witnessed a drama up close, and although it hadn’t reached the truly explicit parts, the scene still made her feel a bit restless.
“Oh, it’s nothing. Haven’t we done the same things?” Ling Mo said with a low chuckle.
Xia Na seemed somewhat reluctant to end the show. “Then why did you close the door, Ling-Ge? We’ve done it ourselves, and it’s kind of interesting to watch other humans do it too.”
“You must have had those thoughts before! Maybe you even secretly watched adult films at home!” Ling Mo exclaimed, looking at Xia Na in shock.
“Hmph, you’re changing the subject because what they’re doing is different from what we did, and you just don’t want us to watch,” Xia Na retorted without being provoked. Since mutating into a zombie, her thoughts had fundamentally diverged from human norms. What might embarrass a human was trivial to Xia Na.
Ling Mo silently regretted his miscalculation. He hadn’t expected to stumble upon such a scene after they quietly snuck in here.
In truth, he was somewhat worried—not that Ye Lian and Xia Na would be corrupted by what they saw—but rather that they might team up and tackle him on the spot. He wasn’t ready for that!
Given Xia Na’s current personality and the fact that Ye Lian and Xia Na usually sided together, Ling Mo thought it wise to guard against these two female zombies!
“Let’s not talk about this. We came here to find Ding Yu,” Ling Mo quickly changed the subject.
After talking with Wang Lin, Xia Na had suggested coming to teach Ding Yu a lesson.
Initially, Ling Mo felt a bit gratified, thinking that Xia Na had finally shown some human sentiment. He assumed she was furious upon hearing that her cousin was almost abandoned, and thus decided to stand up for Wang Lin.
But when Xia Na explained her reasoning, Ling Mo realized he had underestimated what it meant to have a zombie nature… “If he had gotten Wang Lin killed, I would be stuck with the memories, unable to avenge her, and that would bother me for life. If he wants to make me uncomfortable, he’s asking for death! He’s just a human. I don’t need your help, Ling-Ge; I can make him wish he were dead myself.”
The chilling look on Xia Na’s face at that moment gave Ling Mo goosebumps.
“That superhuman is quite strong… Plus, even if you can beat him, going too far wouldn’t be good. Didn’t you hear? Luo Heng is your cousin’s savior…”
“Got it, got it. If you’re so worried, why don’t you just come along?” Xia Na’s eyes gleamed with mischief.
After Ling Mo decided to go with them, Ye Lian immediately followed. She didn’t want to be separated from Ling Mo and left alone with Li Yalin and Wang Lin.
Actually, being alone with Li Yalin wasn’t too bad, but as a human, Wang Lin made Ye Lian feel completely uncomfortable.
So, the unfortunate task fell to Li Yalin. When she found out she had to stay with a human, her eyes widened in shock.
“Don’t eat her!”
“Uh…”
“I’m serious!”
After sternly warning Li Yalin to not even think about harming Wang Lin, Ling Mo, along with Ye Lian and Xia Na, sneaked into the adjacent building to mess with Ding Yu.
However, Ling Mo had no intention of having a direct confrontation with Ding Yu—that would be a last resort. If something happened that made Luo Heng suspicious, it could be problematic.
In fact, putting himself in Ding Yu’s shoes, Ling Mo thought he might have made the same decision.
An extra burden on the team, especially one who joined halfway, wasn’t worth risking everyone’s safety. Saving one person could potentially endanger many others.
This is what they mean by perspectives shaping opinions. From Wang Lin’s point of view, Ding Yu’s decision was hateful because she didn’t want to be abandoned.
But from Ding Yu’s perspective, he probably didn’t think he did anything wrong; he merely suggested a reasonable course of action.
Despite understanding this, Ling Mo was, at his core, someone who sided with his own people. Since Xia Na was angered, Ding Yu had to face some consequences.
Ling Mo glanced at the three zombie puppets following him, a cryptic smile forming on his lips.
Sometimes, teaching someone a lesson didn’t require personal involvement. Letting zombies do the dirty work seemed more fitting.
And they… they just needed to hide and enjoy the show. If things got out of hand, they could step in at the last moment.
Xia Na, though slightly displeased with Ling Mo’s decision, became excited at the thought of seeing Ding Yu suffer.
Even Ye Lian seemed eager. She was clearly interested in the idea of lurking in the background and watching someone get outwitted.
