Chapter 67 – Red Light Street
Seeing that the rain was gradually letting up, Ling Mo quickly packed his backpack and, together with Ye Lian and Xia Na, left the place.
As for the corpses left in the house, it wouldn’t be long before they attracted zombies. Being reduced to skeletons was the inevitable fate of anyone who died in the Apocalypse.
Although the straight-line distance between the Construction Site and X City University was actually very short, the area was densely packed with tall buildings, making it impossible to go straight through. After several days of scouting, Ling Mo chose a route with relatively fewer zombies.
To shorten their travel time, Ling Mo managed to control a zombie and sent it ahead as a scout.
With his Psychic Power having grown, he could control zombies at a range of up to about five hundred meters.
However, to conserve his strength, Ling Mo usually kept this distance to between three and four hundred meters. This allowed him to better control the zombie without too much personal strain.
With the zombie leading the way, Xia Na and Ye Lian could handle any threats that arose, while Ling Mo followed behind, conserving his energy as much as possible.
As the rain gradually ceased, the city, shrouded in mist, began to reveal its true appearance.
Under the overcast sky, the towering buildings and desolate streets painted a picture of a once bustling city now turned into a deadly trap.
The route Ling Mo chose used to be a food street, bustling with people in the evenings but relatively quiet during the day. As a result, fewer zombies lingered here.
However, the “few” zombies in a bustling downtown area were almost as many as the “many” on the outskirts. Fortunately, with a zombie leading the way, Ling Mo could clearly spot those hiding in the shops.
Whenever possible, Ling Mo had no interest in clearing out these ordinary zombies. He even controlled the zombie to close the doors of several shops where more zombies were gathered, locking them inside.
Soon enough, they would start killing each other, and it wouldn’t be surprising if a Mutation Zombie emerged from the chaos.
“Roar!”
As they reached the middle of the food street, a distant roar echoed from somewhere. Ling Mo immediately stopped, frowning as he turned to look in the direction of the sound.
Ye Lian and Xia Na also stopped at the same time, their eyes faintly tinged with red, as if affected by something.
“More zombies… Why have I been hearing zombie roars so often lately?”
This wasn’t the first time Ling Mo had heard this sound. In the past few days that he had been active in this area, he had heard it several times.
Unlike the low growls zombies usually made during a fight, this sound was much louder and gave a slightly unsettling feeling, making one’s blood seem to churn.
It was almost as if these zombies were calling out for something.
Unfortunately, when Ling Mo asked Xia Na about it, she shook her head without hesitation: “I don’t quite understand.”
She was certainly failing as a zombie… Ling Mo wasn’t about to let her off easily, so he questioned her thoroughly.
The only thing Xia Na could confirm was that the roar came from male zombies, and it wasn’t a call for anything.
“And…” Xia Na’s eyes showed a rare hint of discomfort, turning slightly in color. “When I hear it… I feel a bit… uneasy.”
“Hmm… Could it be a zombie’s way of showing dominance?” Ling Mo furrowed his brows in confusion.
He even speculated that the roar might be coming from a Mutation Zombie, or even an Advanced Zombie.
But when he had sneaked closer before, he only found a few ordinary zombies, with no fresh blood on the ground. He had intended to hide and observe a bit longer, but the wind direction betrayed him. The smell of blood on his Short Knife attracted the zombies, forcing Ling Mo to eliminate them all, turning it into a minor unsolved mystery.
Now, they were hearing the roar again. Ling Mo looked up, feeling that Ye Lian and Xia Na’s reactions seemed a bit strange…
However, the direction of the sound was too far away. To find its source, they might have to circle around an entire block…
As Ling Mo hesitated, Xia Na gripped her Long Knife tightly and turned to him: “Let’s go. That sound won’t happen again.”
“Hmm?” Ling Mo looked at Xia Na with some confusion.
Xia Na seemed unsure how to explain. After thinking for a moment, she said, “The last sound we heard… it sounded like it got a response. So, he won’t be calling out again.”
“Since they’re all Zombies, you should know what he was calling for, right?” Ling Mo asked curiously.
Xia Na glanced at Ling Mo and said, “I’m not entirely sure, but after he called, I felt like going over there. But since I have a connection with you, I can’t leave you, so it made me uncomfortable.”
Could this be some kind of call among their kind? The connection Xia Na mentioned was likely referring to their Psychic Link. During this link, Xia Na indeed couldn’t voluntarily leave Ling Mo.
However, thinking about how he and Xia Na had been through life and death together recently, Ling Mo guessed that even if their Psychic Link ended, Xia Na probably wouldn’t see him as prey… probably?
Seeing that Xia Na didn’t fully understand and seemed quite annoyed by the call, Ling Mo decided to suppress his curiosity and continued to control the scouting Zombie ahead.
About an hour later, the three of them had crossed the food street and entered a narrow alley that led directly to the back gate of X City University.
Compared to the food street, this place was much quieter. Two- to three-story buildings lined one side of the street, while the other side was bordered by the wall of X City University.
These buildings looked quite old but were covered with various promotional posters. Neon signs at the entrances made it clear what kind of establishments these were.
“Music Boat,” “Red Spider”… all kinds of small bars and discos lined the street, while the second floors displayed signs for hourly rooms, lodging, and motels. Small convenience stores, on the other hand, were almost nonexistent.
This was the infamous Red Light Street near X City University. It was said that many young and pretty university girls worked part-time here. As for what they did, it was obvious…
For those with little money, unable to afford high-end clubs but looking for some fun, this was the ideal place. Thus, business here used to be booming.
Logically, a Red Light Street like this shouldn’t exist so close to a university, but what hadn’t been resolved back then had now become a permanent fixture.
Given the current situation, Ling Mo didn’t believe that humanity could completely reclaim the world from the Zombies.
The rescue that most Survivors were desperately waiting for hadn’t appeared even now. Continuing to rely on such fantasies seemed laughable.
Of course, this was just Ling Mo’s personal opinion. To him, whether rescue came or not, the fact that he was accompanied by two female Zombies was undeniable. Getting too close to other Survivors might not end well…
Although Ling Mo had picked up and dropped off Ye Lian at X City University a few times, this was his first time on this Red Light Street at the back gate.
However, such places were only bustling at night. So, when the disaster struck, this area ironically had fewer Zombies.
“Maybe we can find a suitable place to stay here,” Ling Mo thought, touching his nose. He continued to control the scouting Zombie, leading the way into Red Light Street.
