Chapter 12 – The Avenging Angel and the Bomb Maniac
Since she was going to die either way, Lin Xi stopped being afraid.
A scar the size of a bowl on her head wouldn’t matter; eighteen years later, she’d be a hero again-wait, no, a great witch.
Embracing the heroic spirit of “laughing at the sky with a blade in hand,” Lin Xi got right in Shi Yu’s face and unleashed her fury:
“Shi Yu, you perverted, fierce bandit, you murderer!”
“You’re not human either, are you?”
“Right, you must be a demon, a demon from the Dark Realm!”
Regardless of whether the Dark Realm actually had such creatures as demons, Lin Xi kept the verbal assault going, cursing Shi Yu up and down.
When she finally grew tired and stopped to catch her breath, Shi Yu crossed her arms. With an air of detached indifference, she turned to Lu Yi.
“Lu Yi, am I really that bad?”
Lu Yi shook her head.
“Lu Yi, you must have been brainwashed by Shi Yu, or… controlled by her demonic power!”
Lin Xi hoped her words would awaken the sense of justice in her Neko classmate’s heart.
In her eyes, a Neko was the embodiment of cuteness and justice!
Lu Yi acted as if she hadn’t heard a word Lin Xi said. “I’m going to eat a tin of fried yellow croaker. Shi Yu, do you want some?”
“No thanks,” Shi Yu said with a smile. “This Perverted Trash Witch made breakfast for me.”
Lu Yi gave an “Oh-” and turned toward the crates of canned food in the back to grab a tin of yellow croaker.
“Finished cursing? Had enough?” Shi Yu asked Lin Xi. “You must be thirsty after shouting for so long.”
Lin Xi nodded. To be honest, her throat felt like it was on fire.
“Want to come in, sit down, and have a cup of tea?”
Lin Xi looked over. This underground base was furnished like a living room.
There was a sofa and a coffee table, set with a teapot and tea set.
“I see,” Lin Xi said. “You think that if you shoot me, blood will splatter all over the floor and you’ll have to mop it up. So, you’re planning to give me poisoned tea to kill me instead.”
Shi Yu neither admitted nor denied it, simply commanding as always:
“Get in there.”
Since she was already fish on a chopping block, Lin Xi didn’t care if she was shot in the head or poisoned to death.
After entering, she plopped down on the sofa and crossed her legs.
“Since you don’t plan on killing me immediately, tell me, who are you people?”
“At least let me die with some understanding. Don’t make me a ghost who died in the dark.”
Shi Yu poured a cup of tea for both herself and Lin Xi, while Lu Yi sat down beside Shi Yu and began eating her fried yellow croaker with gusto.
It smelled so good… Lin Xi felt a bit of a craving…
“It’s not poisoned.” Shi Yu picked up her teacup and took a sip to show Lin Xi.
“Hmph,” Lin Xi curled her lip. “Even if it were poisoned, I wouldn’t be afraid.”
Because she was so thirsty, she picked up the cup and downed it in one go.
Shi Yu spoke unhurriedly. “I can tell you who we are.”
“But first, you have to tell me why you’re such a failure.”
“Witches have always been First Grade or higher Dark Realm Disasters. How did a piece of trash like you end up existing?”
Lin Xi slammed her teacup onto the table. “Who are you calling trash?”
“You,” Shi Yu replied, slamming her own cup onto the table just as hard.
“Right back at you,” Lin Xi retorted, leaning back tactically.
Shi Yu: “…”
“I’ll give you one minute to answer my question.”
Shi Yu looked down at her watch.
Lin Xi had no intention of revealing that she actually came from another world and was possessing the body of the Cuddle Witch.
“Because… I want to be a good person. No, a good witch.”
“You have 40 seconds left. Time’s running out~”
“Because I…”
“10-second countdown starts now. 10, 9-“
“Why jump straight to the countdown?! Did you eat the 30 seconds in between?!”
“…5, 4, 3-” As Shi Yu counted down, she reached for the pistol at the small of her back.
Lin Xi squeezed her eyes shut and steeled herself:
“Because I have amnesia!”
“I forgot how to use my powers. Believe it or not!”
Lin Xi didn’t hear a gunshot. She slowly opened her eyes.
Shi Yu wasn’t pointing a gun at her; instead, she had picked up her teacup again.
Shi Yu said, “I believe you.”
“Seeing how pathetic you look when you’re scared, I doubt you’d dare to lie.”
“So, why do you have amnesia?”
“When did it happen?”
Lin Xi said, “I don’t know why I lost my memory. I just woke up yesterday morning and it was gone.”
“Luckily, Xinning came to get me for school, otherwise I wouldn’t have even found the place.”
“Once I got to school, I had to use the room numbers to find my class. Then I used the seating chart on the teacher’s desk to find my seat.”
“Anyway, I don’t remember anything from before, and that includes how to use my powers.”
“Wait,” Shi Yu interrupted. “I remember you answering questions in class. You even got them right. How come you haven’t forgotten what you learned?”
Lin Xi could only feel lucky that the high school knowledge in this parallel world was similar to what she had learned in her original world.
After all, she was a prospective college student who had survived the grind of the Gaokao. Answering a few questions correctly was only natural.
“I’m just a good student, through and through.”
“Even if I forget who I am, I won’t forget the knowledge I’ve acquired.”
“I’m determined to become a talent useful to society and contribute to the prosperity of Z City.”
“Stop giving me that nonsense.” Shi Yu told Lin Xi to shut up. “Amnesia? Why didn’t you tell me sooner that you had amnesia and couldn’t use your powers?”
“Bullshit!” Lin Xi couldn’t help but snap back. “You spend all day threatening me to do this and that. Why would I tell you my trump card? Even if I don’t actually have one…”
“Besides, did you tell me in advance that you were planning to rob a bank?”
Shi Yu smiled. “How can you say I didn’t? Didn’t I tell you? Robbing a bank, a seventy-thirty split.”
“I thought you were joking! Who knew you were serious?” Lin Xi said, looking aggrieved.
If she had known Shi Yu was being serious, Lin Xi would have definitely told her that she had no power and not to drag her along to rob a bank.
Sigh.
It had already happened; regret was useless now.
Whatever happens, happens.
Lin Xi looked up, her gaze fixed firmly on Shi Yu.
“I’ve said everything I need to say. It’s your turn to answer my questions.”
Lin Xi didn’t want to die without knowing what was going on.
“Fine,” Shi Yu said. “You wanted to know who we are, right?”
“I am the ‘Avenging Angel,’ and Lu Yi is the ‘Bomb Maniac.'”
Lin Xi stood there, stunned.
Avenging Angel?
Bomb Maniac?
Shi Yu seemed to see right through Lin Xi’s thoughts and said with a sinister grin, “Don’t believe me? Want Lu Yi to show you what she can do?”
“Understood.” The Neko, who had just finished her canned yellow croaker, immediately began rummaging through her backpack.
Lin Xi hurriedly protested that it wasn’t necessary. “Lu Yi, please, put your ‘divine powers’ away!”
She was terrified that Lu Yi would mess up and blow the place to bits. Wouldn’t she end up without even a corpse to bury?
Shi Yu continued, “Avenging Angel and Bomb Maniac are the codenames for Lu Yi and me within the organization.”
“So you really are from some terrorist organization…” Lin Xi muttered under her breath.
“A terrorist organization? We’re nothing of the sort!” Shi Yu grew slightly agitated. “We are definitely a Justice Partner.”
“I’ve never heard of a Justice Partner who robs banks and shoots people.”
“That’s because you don’t know the truth.” Shi Yu didn’t reveal the hidden details directly. Instead, she asked Lin Xi a question.
“Our Model Student, the Perverted Trash Witch Miss Lin Xi-tell me, do you know the history of this Mass Grave?”
“I do. Isn’t it in the geography textbooks? A small town in the Z City Northern Suburbs was hit by a First-Grade Disaster from the Dark Realm, and the town was wiped out. Gradually, this place turned into a Mass Grave.”
“What if I told you the books are full of crap?” Shi Yu said. “What destroyed this place wasn’t a First-Grade Disaster from the Dark Realm, but a monster that escaped from a Shuguang Technology Laboratory!”
Shi Yu was clearly indignant.
Lin Xi also knew about the “Shuguang Technology” she mentioned.
It was hard not to know.
After all, traces of Shuguang Technology could be seen in every street and alley.
Shuguang Technology’s tech and products influenced the food, clothing, housing, and transportation of the vast majority of people in Z City.
It was the largest conglomerate in Z City.
Lin Xi was skeptical of Shi Yu’s words.
She didn’t trust a massive capitalist tycoon like Shuguang Technology, but she didn’t trust this little devil either.
“Shi Yu, how do you know about something like that?”
“Because my parents used to be senior researchers at Shuguang Technology,” Shi Yu said. “I saw the truth of that disaster in the records they left behind. The monster that destroyed the town didn’t come from the Dark Realm; it was created by Shuguang Technology.”
“Left behind? Your parents…”
“Because my parents didn’t agree with that kind of research, they secretly gathered materials and prepared to report Shuguang Technology. However, they were brutally murdered…”
For the first time, Lin Xi saw the little devil looking lonely, her eyes hiding a smoldering rage.
No wonder Shi Yu’s codename was Avenging Angel…
